Technical translation is the translation of documents with technical content that requires an understanding of technical principles, industry-specific terminology and the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly. It encompasses user manuals and assembly instructions, technical manuals and service handbooks, product specifications and data sheets, safety data sheets and CE marking documentation, as well as technical reports and research publications.

What is required of a technical translator?

A technical translator must have technical understanding of the relevant subject area such as mechanical engineering, electronics, IT or medical technology, master technical terminology precisely in both source and target languages and understand technical standards and regulations that apply to the target market. The translator must be able to read and understand technical drawings, diagrams and specifications, translate technical instructions so that they become clear and usable and ensure that safety information is correct and comprehensible to prevent accidents.

Challenges in technical translation

Technical terminology must be precise as different terms often have specific technical meanings. Units of measurement and standards differ between countries and must be adapted correctly. Safety instructions must be crystal clear as ambiguities can lead to danger. Technical documents must often comply with specific regulations and standards in the target market. For medical technology products, for example, strict requirements apply to documentation and translation. An experienced language partner with technical translation expertise works to ISO standards with ISO-certified system support and uses the four-eyes principle where at least two technical experts review the translation. They build client-specific technical term bases that ensure consistent terminology throughout all product documentation and use translation memories to reuse previously translated technical phrases, which enhances both quality and efficiency.   Contact us at Fluid Translation if you would like to know more about technical translation.
