IT translation is the translation of IT-related documentation, software and texts with technical content that requires an understanding of information technology, software development and IT infrastructure. It encompasses software localisation where user interfaces and system messages, technical documentation such as user manuals and administrator guides and IT security documentation and policy documents are translated.

Types of IT translation

IT translation includes software interfaces with menus, buttons, dialogue boxes and error messages, user manuals and help documentation for end users, technical specifications and API documentation for developers, web applications and e-commerce platforms, as well as IT security documentation and compliance material. Each type of translation presents different challenges. Software interfaces require concise translation that fits within limited space and follows platform conventions. User manuals must be educational and easily understood for non-technical users. Developer documentation requires the use of precise technical terminology and an understanding of programming concepts.

Software localisation

Software localisation goes beyond translation and includes the adaptation of date formats, time formats and numerical formats, currency handling and price display, keyboard shortcuts and hotkeys, as well as the adjustment of text direction for languages such as Arabic or Hebrew. The localisation process must also handle string variables and plurals and gender inflection that function differently across various languages. A professional IT translator understands these technical challenges and can work with localisation tools.

IT terminology and consistency

IT terminology must be consistent throughout the entire product documentation. The same technical terms should be translated identically every time – inconsistency confuses users and makes documentation difficult to follow. Certain IT terms are left in English as they are used globally, whilst others are translated according to local conventions. An experienced translation partner with IT translation expertise works according to ISO standards with ISO-certified system support and uses translators with technical backgrounds or documented experience in software translation. They build IT term bases that ensure consistent terminology and use translation memories to reuse previously translated phrases, which enhances quality and efficiency.
