An interim report, also called an interim financial statement, is the financial report that listed companies publish to provide investors with insight into a company’s financial performance during different parts of the financial year. For Swedish companies listed on Nasdaq Stockholm, this typically involves quarterly reports published after each three-month period in accordance with the exchange’s regulations.

The content and structure of interim reports

An interim report contains financial information for the quarter and cumulatively since the beginning of the financial year. An income statement shows revenue, costs and profit for the period. A balance sheet shows assets, liabilities and equity at the end of the quarter. A cash flow analysis describes how a company has generated and used liquid funds. A CEO commentary is central to the report and describes a quarter’s development, material events and a company’s future prospects.

The differences between interim reports and annual reports

An interim report is shorter than an annual report and focuses on financial figures and the CEO commentary, whilst an annual report contains comprehensive notes, a directors’ report, a sustainability report and an auditor’s report. Interim reports are unaudited, whilst an annual report is reviewed by auditors. Despite an interim report being shorter, it is important because the market will reacts to its publication and a company’s share price will be affected.
