Investor relations is a strategic function that combines finance, communication and marketing to manage a company’s relationship with the financial markets. It encompasses all communication between a company and its current shareholders, potential investors, financial analysts and the financial media.
Key areas within investor relations
The IR function is responsible for financial reporting including annual reports, quarterly reports and interim reports that communicate profits and financial position. Corporate communication encompasses company presentations, strategy documents and business model descriptions that explain how a company creates value. Capital communication includes press releases about financial results and material events, as well as the contents of an IR website with financial reports, company presentations and shareholder information. Direct dialogue with investors and analysts occurs through investor meetings and conference calls following earnings reports, as well as Capital Markets Days and roadshows.
An IR department’s role
An IR team functions as a bridge between a company’s management and the financial markets. They translate a company’s strategy and operations into information that investors and analysts can use to evaluate the company. They ensure that communication complies with stock exchange rules and regulatory requirements, build long-term relationships with key investors and analysts and manage market communication proactively to avoid misunderstandings. The IR function also monitors what analysts write, how the share is valued relative to competitors and collect feedback from investors that might be valuable for management.
IR for international markets
Companies seeking international capital must be able to communicate professionally in multiple languages. English is the standard for IR communication, but certain markets require local language support. IR translation requires IFRS expertise as financial terminology must be precise, copywriting competence for CEO messages and key communications, as well as an understanding of how different capital markets operate. An experienced language partner with IR specialisation works to ISO standards with ISO-certified system support and uses financial experts with at least ten years’ experience, applies the four-eyes principle with dual review, offers copywriting of key texts, an ICR (In-Country Review) platform for client validation and secure data handling because IR material is often translated before publication. Fluid Translation has over 20 years’ experience translating IR material. Read more in our client case studies.
